LOWER PROVO RIVER

A short half hour from Park City Utah, the Lower Provo River runs through Provo Canyon, between Deer Creek Reservoir and Utah Lake. A fly fishing guide favorite during the spring and fall, the Lower features an extraordinary biomass of insects and freshwater crustaceans, such as sowbugs. Accordingly, fish on the Lower, browns and even more abundant rainbow trout, are fat and healthy, and somewhat bigger (14-20 inches) than their neighbors in the Middle Provo.

Spring on the Lower Provo is further marked by a sensational blue-winged olive hatch. Note that summer has great fishing as well, although an early start is recommended, in order to mitigate the Lower’s popularity with rafters and tubers.
